Learning the Basics:
5 Stages of Wheel Throwing

  • Centering: Mastering this crucial step ensures a well-balanced foundation for your pottery.
  • Opening: Expanding the centered clay to create the initial shape.
  • Pulling: Increasing the height of the pot by shaping the clay upwards. Shaping: Learning to form the clay into specific shapes, starting with cylinders.
  • Manipulation: Refining and personalizing the shape using various techniques.
  • Forming Techniques: The course focuses on throwing versatile cylinder forms, which can then be modified into bowls, cups and plates.
  • Trimming (Turning): This post-throwing technique uses specialized tools to achieve:
    • Even wall thickness for strength and consistent drying.
    • Stable and potentially decorative foot creation.
    • Drying Techniques: You’ll learn two methods:
      • Traditional overnight air-drying.
      • Using the studio’s electric drying cabinets.
