Highlights of the Resident Artist Throwing Sessions:

  • Flexible Learning: Enjoy a blend of self-directed learning and in-person demonstrations, allowing you to learn at your own pace while gaining valuable insights from qualified trainers.

  • Personalized Learning: Explore the teaching methods of various artists based on your schedule. You can choose to attend demonstrations that align with your interests and skill level.
  • Enhanced Skills: By attending demonstrations from different artists, you'll be exposed to diverse techniques and approaches, enriching your overall pottery skills.

Learning the Basics:
5 Stages of Wheel Throwing

  • Centering: Mastering this crucial step ensures a well-balanced foundation for your pottery.
  • Opening: Expanding the centered clay to create the initial shape.
  • Pulling: Increasing the height of the pot by shaping the clay upwards. Shaping: Learning to form the clay into specific shapes, starting with cylinders.
  • Manipulation: Refining and personalizing the shape using various techniques.
  • Forming Techniques: The course focuses on throwing versatile cylinder forms, which can then be modified into bowls, cups and plates.
  • Trimming (Turning): This post-throwing technique uses specialized tools to achieve:
    • Even wall thickness for strength and consistent drying.
    • Stable and potentially decorative foot creation.
    • Drying Techniques: You’ll learn two methods:
      • Traditional overnight air-drying.
      • Using the studio’s electric drying cabinets.

Experienced Mentors: Gain exposure to diverse throwing approaches from instructors with unique styles and cultural backgrounds.

Elective Mini Demonstrations: Scheduled ‘mini demos’ of decorative and forming techniques will give you an enriched learning benefit. Zoom into specific interest area by booking yourself into these special scheduled live demos to accelerates and enrich your learning. These sessions are perfect for addressing specific questions or overcoming challenges during your independent practice.

Structured Skill Development: The 6 milestone syllabus gives you a clear road map to build the essential basic skills. Advance and larger forms are built on the basic skills. The combination of hands-on practice, personalised instruction, and exposure to various techniques will equip you with a strong foundation to build upon your wheel-throwing skills.

  • Fully guided instructions
  • Use of top quality wheels (American made wheels Axner and Brent)
  • Free clay – Unlimited use
  • 7 days a week access to studio for self practice (Access pass use)
  • Small instructor to student ratio at 1 : 6
  • Option to book into dip glazing and Amaco brush-on techniques to add your final touch.
